Selmier State Forest was donated to the state of Indiana by Mrs. Frank Selmier on behalf of her husband. Frank Selmier had a strong interest in the outdoors. He planted several acres on this property to pine, black locust, black walnut, sycamore and tuliptree from 1921 to 1934. Most of the property was placed in Indiana's Classified Forest Program between 1927 and 1931.

There are three known building sites on the property: A boy scout cabin; the Zoar school, which was converted to a church; and an old home site off Walnut Trail.

Fishing

A small fishing pond is located off the Self-Guided Trail. Fishing and access to the Muscatatuck River are available from the forest; species of fish include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bluegill, perch, and catfish. A valid Indiana fishing license is required.

Hunting

Whitetail deer, turkey, squirrel, and raccoon. A valid hunting license is required.

Hiking Trails

There are several short trails from which to enjoy Selmier State Forest.

Self-Guided Forest Management Trail
One mile. Tree identification, successional areas, timber stand improvement practices and a pond are features of this trail.

White Pine Trail

Walnut Trail

Cabin Trail

Big Woods Trail

Gill Pond Trail

Old Pond Trail

Hikers are advised to wear hunter orange or other bright clothing while on trails during hunting season.

There are no public restrooms, camping, picnicking, swimming, horse trails or boat launching facilities available. Nearby camping available at Versailles State Park, Muscatatuck County Park and Broomsage Ranch.

Located 2 miles northeast of North Vernon on County Road 350 North. From Indianapolis: take I-74 south to Greensburg (about 51 miles), then take Highway 3 south to the Selmier State Forest sign just north of North Vernon. Take County Road 350 North (about 3 miles) to the main entrance located on the south side of the road, designated by two large stone guardhouses on each side of the driveway leading to the District Forester's offices.
