ER staff respond to large scale spills along rail lines and in rail yards. Here, several thousand gallons of diesel fuel lost from a wrecked locomotive are recovered from the rail ballast (rock base) inside Conrail's yard in Elkhart.
Train derailments may include hazardous substances. At right, three cars of Chlorine gas in a 1998 derailment caused a precautionary evacuation in Greencastle, IN. The containers look bad, but no product was released.
ER staff respond to large scale spills on the Ohio River. In 1998, this barge ran aground in high wind conditions. The bottom of the tug and its 68,000 gallons fuel tank were pierced - releasing fuel to the Ohio River.
ER staff assist other program areas during emergency conditions. ER and UST staff responded to Seymour in 1998 after local officials reported possible explosive levels of gasoline from two abandoned tanks.
